EHS Compliance

EHS Compliance refers to an organization’s adherence to environmental, health, and safety regulations and standards. It ensures that businesses operate responsibly by minimizing risks to people and the environment, maintaining safe workplaces, and following legal requirements.

Controls:

The organization shall determine external and internal issues relevant to its purpose and strategic direction and that affect its ability to achieve the intended result(s) of its quality management system.

  • Understanding the organization and its context (QMS) - 9001.4.1

    The organization shall determine external and internal issues relevant to its purpose and its strategic direction and that affect its ability to achieve the intended result(s) of its quality management system. The organization shall monitor and review information about these external and internal issues.

  • Understanding the needs and expectations of interested parties (QMS) - 9001.4.2

    The organization shall determine the interested parties that are relevant to the quality management system and the requirements of these interested parties that are relevant to the quality management system. The organization shall monitor and review information about these interested parties and their relevant requirements.

  • Determining the scope of the quality management system (QMS) - 9001.4.3

    The organization shall determine the boundaries and applicability of the quality management system to establish its scope. The scope shall be available and maintained as documented information.

  • Quality management system and its processes (QMS) - 9001.4.4

    The organization shall establish; implement; maintain and continually improve a quality management system; including the processes needed and their interactions; in accordance with the requirements of this International Standard.

Top management shall demonstrate leadership and commitment with respect to the quality management system.

  • Leadership and commitment (QMS) - 9001.5.1

    Top management shall demonstrate leadership and commitment with respect to the quality management system by: a) taking accountability for the effectiveness of the QMS; b) ensuring the quality policy and objectives are established and compatible with the context and strategic direction; c) ensuring the integration of QMS requirements into business processes; d) promoting the use of the process approach and risk-based thinking; e) ensuring resources are available; f) communicating the importance of effective QMS and of conforming to QMS requirements; g) ensuring the QMS achieves its intended results; h) engaging; directing and supporting persons to contribute to the effectiveness of the QMS; i) promoting improvement; j) supporting other relevant management roles to demonstrate their leadership as it applies to their areas of responsibility.

  • Policy (QMS) - 9001.5.2

    Top management shall establish; implement and maintain a quality policy that: a) is appropriate to the purpose and context of the organization and supports its strategic direction; b) provides a framework for setting quality objectives; c) includes a commitment to satisfy applicable requirements; d) includes a commitment to continual improvement of the QMS.

  • Organizational roles; responsibilities and authorities (QMS) - 9001.5.3

    Top management shall ensure that the responsibilities and authorities for relevant roles are assigned; communicated and understood within the organization.

When planning for the quality management system; the organization shall consider the issues referred to in 4.1 and the requirements referred to in 4.2 and determine the risks and opportunities that need to be addressed.

  • Actions to address risks and opportunities (QMS) - 9001.6.1

    When planning for the QMS; the organization shall consider the issues in 4.1 and requirements in 4.2 and determine the risks and opportunities that need to be addressed to: a) give assurance that the QMS can achieve its intended result(s); b) enhance desirable effects; c) prevent; or reduce; undesired effects; d) achieve improvement. The organization shall plan actions to address these risks and opportunities; and how to integrate and implement them into QMS processes and evaluate their effectiveness.

  • Quality objectives and planning to achieve them (QMS) - 9001.6.2

    The organization shall establish quality objectives at relevant functions; levels and processes needed for the QMS. The quality objectives shall: be consistent with the quality policy; be measurable; take into account applicable requirements; be relevant to conformity of products and services and to the enhancement of customer satisfaction; be monitored; be communicated; be updated as appropriate.

  • Planning of changes (QMS) - 9001.6.3

    When the organization determines the need for changes to the QMS; the changes shall be carried out in a planned manner (see 4.4).

The organization shall determine and provide the resources needed for the establishment; implementation; maintenance and continual improvement of the quality management system.

  • Resources (QMS) - 9001.7.1

    This clause covers general resources; people; infrastructure; environment for the operation of processes; monitoring and measuring resources; and organizational knowledge.

  • Competence (QMS) - 9001.7.2

    The organization shall: a) determine the necessary competence of person(s) doing work under its control that affects the performance and effectiveness of the QMS; b) ensure that these persons are competent on the basis of appropriate education; training; or experience; c) where applicable; take actions to acquire the necessary competence; and evaluate the effectiveness of the actions taken; d) retain appropriate documented information as evidence of competence.

  • Awareness (QMS) - 9001.7.3

    The organization shall ensure that persons doing work under the organization’s control are aware of: a) the quality policy; b) relevant quality objectives; c) their contribution to the effectiveness of the QMS; including the benefits of improved performance; d) the implications of not conforming with the QMS requirements.

  • Communication (QMS) - 9001.7.4

    The organization shall determine the internal and external communications relevant to the QMS; including: a) on what it will communicate; b) when to communicate; c) with whom to communicate; d) how to communicate; e) who communicates.

  • Documented information (QMS) - 9001.7.5

    The organization’s QMS shall include: a) documented information required by this International Standard; b) documented information determined by the organization as being necessary for the effectiveness of the QMS. This clause also covers creating; updating and control of documented information.

The organization shall plan; implement and control the processes (see 4.4) needed to meet the requirements for the provision of products and services; and to implement the actions determined in Clause 6.

  • Operational planning and control (QMS) - 9001.8.1

    The organization shall plan; implement and control the processes needed to meet requirements for the provision of products and services; and to implement the actions determined in Clause 6 by determining requirements; establishing criteria for processes and acceptance of products/services; determining resources; implementing control of processes; and maintaining documented information.

  • Requirements for products and services (QMS) - 9001.8.2

    This includes customer communication; determining requirements related to products and services; reviewing requirements related to products and services; and changes to requirements for products and services.

  • Design and development of products and services (QMS) - 9001.8.3

    The organization shall establish; implement and maintain a design and development process that is appropriate to ensure the subsequent provision of products and services. This covers planning; inputs; controls; outputs and changes.

  • Control of externally provided processes; products and services (QMS) - 9001.8.4

    The organization shall ensure that externally provided processes; products and services conform to requirements. This covers type and extent of control; and information for external providers.

  • Production and service provision (QMS) - 9001.8.5

    The organization shall implement production and service provision under controlled conditions. This covers control of production/service provision; identification and traceability; property belonging to customers or external providers; preservation; post-delivery activities; and control of changes.

  • Release of products and services (QMS) - 9001.8.6

    The organization shall implement planned arrangements; at appropriate stages; to verify that the product and service requirements have been met. The release of products and services to the customer shall not proceed until the planned arrangements have been satisfactorily completed; unless otherwise approved by a relevant authority and; where applicable; by the customer.

  • Control of nonconforming outputs (QMS) - 9001.8.7

    The organization shall ensure that outputs that do not conform to their requirements are identified and controlled to prevent their unintended use or delivery. The organization shall take appropriate action based on the nature of the nonconformity and its effect on the conformity of products and services.

The organization shall evaluate the performance and the effectiveness of the quality management system.

  • Monitoring; measurement; analysis and evaluation (QMS) - 9001.9.1

    The organization shall determine: a) what needs to be monitored and measured; b) the methods for monitoring; measurement; analysis and evaluation needed to ensure valid results; c) when the monitoring and measuring shall be performed; d) when the results from monitoring and measurement shall be analysed and evaluated. The organization shall evaluate the performance of the QMS and its effectiveness. This includes customer satisfaction.

  • Internal audit (QMS) - 9001.9.2

    The organization shall conduct internal audits at planned intervals to provide information on whether the QMS: a) conforms to the organization’s own requirements for its QMS and the requirements of this International Standard; b) is effectively implemented and maintained.

  • Management review (QMS) - 9001.9.3

    Top management shall review the organization's QMS at planned intervals to ensure its continuing suitability; adequacy; effectiveness and alignment with the strategic direction of the organization.

The organization shall determine and select opportunities for improvement and implement any necessary actions to meet customer requirements and enhance customer satisfaction.

  • General (QMS) - 9001.10.1

    The organization shall determine and select opportunities for improvement (see 9.1; 9.2 and 9.3) and implement any necessary actions to meet customer requirements and enhance customer satisfaction. These shall include improving products and services to meet requirements as well as to address future needs and expectations; correcting; preventing or reducing undesired effects; improving the performance and effectiveness of the QMS.

  • Nonconformity and corrective action (QMS) - 9001.10.2

    When a nonconformity occurs; including any arising from complaints; the organization shall: a) react to the nonconformity; b) evaluate the need for action to eliminate the cause(s) of the nonconformity; c) implement any action needed; d) review the effectiveness of any corrective action taken; e) make changes to the QMS; if necessary.

  • Continual improvement (QMS) - 9001.10.3

    The organization shall continually improve the suitability; adequacy and effectiveness of the quality management system.

The organization shall determine external and internal issues that are relevant to its purpose and that affect its ability to achieve the intended outcomes of its environmental management system.

  • Understanding the organization and its context (EMS) - 14001.4.1

    The organization shall determine external and internal issues that are relevant to its purpose and that affect its ability to achieve the intended outcomes of its environmental management system. Such issues shall include environmental conditions being affected by or capable of affecting the organization.

  • Understanding the needs and expectations of interested parties (EMS) - 14001.4.2

    The organization shall determine: a) the interested parties that are relevant to the environmental management system; b) the relevant needs and expectations (i.e. requirements) of these interested parties; c) which of these needs and expectations become its compliance obligations.

  • Determining the scope of the environmental management system (EMS) - 14001.4.3

    The organization shall determine the boundaries and applicability of the environmental management system to establish its scope. The scope shall be maintained as documented information.

  • Environmental management system (EMS) - 14001.4.4

    To achieve the intended outcomes; including enhancing its environmental performance; the organization shall establish; implement; maintain and continually improve an environmental management system; including the processes needed and their interactions; in accordance with the requirements of this International Standard.

Top management shall demonstrate leadership and commitment with respect to the environmental management system.

  • Leadership and commitment (EMS) - 14001.5.1

    Top management shall demonstrate leadership and commitment with respect to the environmental management system by: a) taking accountability for the effectiveness of the EMS; b) ensuring the environmental policy and objectives are established and compatible with the context and strategic direction; c) ensuring EMS requirements are integrated into business processes; d) ensuring resources are available; e) communicating importance of effective EMS and conforming to EMS requirements; f) ensuring the EMS achieves intended outcomes; g) directing and supporting persons to contribute to EMS effectiveness; h) promoting continual improvement; i) supporting other relevant management roles.

  • Environmental policy (EMS) - 14001.5.2

    Top management shall establish; implement and maintain an environmental policy that is appropriate to the purpose and context; provides a framework for setting environmental objectives; includes a commitment to the protection of the environment (including prevention of pollution); commitment to fulfil its compliance obligations; and commitment to continual improvement.

  • Organizational roles; responsibilities and authorities (EMS) - 14001.5.3

    Top management shall ensure that responsibilities and authorities for relevant roles are assigned and communicated within the organization; including responsibility for ensuring the EMS conforms to the standard and reporting on EMS performance to top management.

When planning for the environmental management system; the organization shall consider the issues in 4.1; requirements in 4.2; and its scope; and determine the risks and opportunities; related to its environmental aspects; compliance obligations and other issues and requirements; that need to be addressed.

  • Actions to address risks and opportunities (EMS) - 14001.6.1

    This includes general planning (6.1.1); identifying environmental aspects (6.1.2); determining compliance obligations (6.1.3); and planning action to address these (6.1.4).

  • Environmental objectives and planning to achieve them (EMS) - 14001.6.2

    The organization shall establish environmental objectives at relevant functions and levels. Objectives shall be: consistent with policy; measurable; monitored; communicated; updated; and take into account significant environmental aspects; compliance obligations; risks and opportunities. The organization shall plan how to achieve its environmental objectives.

The organization shall determine and provide the resources needed for the establishment; implementation; maintenance and continual improvement of the environmental management system.

  • Resources (EMS) - 14001.7.1

    The organization shall determine and provide the resources needed for the establishment; implementation; maintenance and continual improvement of the EMS.

  • Competence (EMS) - 14001.7.2

    The organization shall: a) determine necessary competence of persons doing work under its control that affects its environmental performance and its ability to fulfil its compliance obligations; b) ensure these persons are competent; c) take actions to acquire competence; d) retain documented information as evidence.

  • Awareness (EMS) - 14001.7.3

    The organization shall ensure that persons doing work under its control are aware of: a) the environmental policy; b) significant environmental aspects and related actual or potential environmental impacts associated with their work; c) their contribution to the effectiveness of the EMS; d) implications of not conforming with EMS requirements; including not fulfilling compliance obligations.

  • Communication (EMS) - 14001.7.4

    The organization shall establish; implement and maintain the processes needed for internal and external communications relevant to the EMS.

  • Documented information (EMS) - 14001.7.5

    The EMS shall include: a) documented information required by this Standard; b) documented information determined by the organization as necessary for EMS effectiveness. This clause also covers creating; updating and control.

The organization shall plan; implement and control the processes needed to meet environmental management system requirements and to implement the actions identified in 6.1 and 6.2.

  • Operational planning and control (EMS) - 14001.8.1

    The organization shall establish; implement; control and maintain the processes needed to meet EMS requirements and to implement actions identified in 6.1 and 6.2 by establishing operating criteria and implementing control of processes. This includes outsourced processes and considering a life cycle perspective.

  • Emergency preparedness and response (EMS) - 14001.8.2

    The organization shall establish; implement and maintain the processes needed to prepare for and to respond to potential emergency situations identified in 6.1.1.

The organization shall monitor; measure; analyse and evaluate its environmental performance.

  • Monitoring; measurement; analysis and evaluation (EMS) - 14001.9.1

    The organization shall determine what needs to be monitored and measured; methods; when it will be performed; and when results will be analysed and evaluated. The organization shall evaluate its environmental performance and the effectiveness of the EMS. This includes evaluation of compliance with its compliance obligations.

  • Internal audit (EMS) - 14001.9.2

    The organization shall conduct internal audits at planned intervals to provide information on whether the EMS: a) conforms to the organization’s own requirements and the standard's requirements; b) is effectively implemented and maintained.

  • Management review (EMS) - 14001.9.3

    Top management shall review the organization's EMS at planned intervals to ensure its continuing suitability; adequacy and effectiveness.

The organization shall determine opportunities for improvement (see 9.1; 9.2 and 9.3) and implement necessary actions to achieve the intended outcomes of its environmental management system.

  • General (EMS) - 14001.10.1

    The organization shall determine opportunities for improvement and implement necessary actions to achieve the intended outcomes of its EMS.

  • Nonconformity and corrective action (EMS) - 14001.10.2

    When a nonconformity occurs; the organization shall: a) react to it; b) evaluate need for action to eliminate causes; c) implement action; d) review effectiveness; e) make changes to EMS if necessary.

  • Continual improvement (EMS) - 14001.10.3

    The organization shall continually improve the suitability; adequacy and effectiveness of the EMS to enhance environmental performance.

The organization shall determine external and internal issues that are relevant to its purpose and that affect its ability to achieve the intended outcomes of its OH&S management system.

  • Understanding the organization and its context (OHSMS) - 45001.4.1

    The organization shall determine external and internal issues that are relevant to its purpose and that affect its ability to achieve the intended outcomes of its OH&S management system.

  • Understanding the needs and expectations of workers and other interested parties (OHSMS) - 45001.4.2

    The organization shall determine: a) other interested parties; in addition to workers; that are relevant to the OH&S MS; b) the relevant needs and expectations (i.e. requirements) of workers and other interested parties; c) which of these needs and expectations are; or could become; legal requirements and other requirements.

  • Determining the scope of the OH&S management system (OHSMS) - 45001.4.3

    The organization shall determine the boundaries and applicability of the OH&S MS to establish its scope. The scope shall be available as documented information.

  • OH&S management system (OHSMS) - 45001.4.4

    The organization shall establish; implement; maintain and continually improve an OH&S management system; including the processes needed and their interactions; in accordance with the requirements of this document.

Top management shall demonstrate leadership and commitment with respect to the OH&S management system and promote worker participation.

  • Leadership and commitment (OHSMS) - 45001.5.1

    Top management shall demonstrate leadership and commitment by: a) taking overall responsibility and accountability for the prevention of work-related injury and ill health; b) ensuring OH&S policy and objectives are established; c) ensuring integration of OH&S MS into business processes; d) ensuring resources; e) communicating importance; f) ensuring OH&S MS achieves outcomes; g) directing/supporting persons; h) ensuring/promoting continual improvement; i) supporting other management roles; j) developing a culture supporting OH&S MS; k) protecting workers from reprisals; l) ensuring consultation/participation of workers.

  • OH&S Policy (OHSMS) - 45001.5.2

    Top management shall establish; implement and maintain an OH&S policy that: a) includes a commitment to provide safe and healthy working conditions for the prevention of work-related injury and ill health and is appropriate to the purpose; size and context of the organization and to the specific nature of its OH&S risks and OH&S opportunities; b) provides a framework for setting OH&S objectives; c) includes a commitment to fulfil legal requirements and other requirements; d) includes a commitment to eliminate hazards and reduce OH&S risks; e) includes a commitment to continual improvement of the OH&S MS; f) includes a commitment to consultation and participation of workers; and; where they exist; workers’ representatives.

  • Organizational roles; responsibilities and authorities (OHSMS) - 45001.5.3

    Top management shall ensure responsibilities and authorities for relevant roles within the OH&S MS are assigned and communicated at all levels within the organization and maintained as documented information. Workers at each level of the organization shall assume responsibility for those aspects of the OH&S MS over which they have control.

  • Consultation and participation of workers (OHSMS) - 45001.5.4

    The organization shall establish; implement and maintain a process(es) for consultation and participation of workers at all applicable levels and functions; and; where they exist; workers’ representatives; in the development; planning; implementation; performance evaluation and actions for improvement of the OH&S MS.

When planning for the OH&S management system; the organization shall consider the issues referred to in 4.1 (context); the requirements referred to in 4.2 (interested parties) and 4.3 (scope) and determine the risks and opportunities that need to be addressed.

  • Actions to address risks and opportunities (OHSMS) - 45001.6.1

    This includes general planning (6.1.1); hazard identification and assessment of risks and opportunities (6.1.2); determination of legal requirements and other requirements (6.1.3); and planning action (6.1.4).

  • OH&S objectives and planning to achieve them (OHSMS) - 45001.6.2

    The organization shall establish OH&S objectives at relevant functions and levels. Objectives shall be: consistent with OH&S policy; measurable; take into account applicable requirements; results of risk/opportunity assessment; results of consultation; monitored; communicated; and updated. Planning to achieve OH&S objectives involves determining what will be done; resources; responsibilities; timelines; and how results will be evaluated.

The organization shall determine and provide the resources needed for the establishment; implementation; maintenance and continual improvement of the OH&S management system.

  • Resources (OHSMS) - 45001.7.1

    The organization shall determine and provide the resources needed for the establishment; implementation; maintenance and continual improvement of the OH&S MS.

  • Competence (OHSMS) - 45001.7.2

    The organization shall: a) determine the necessary competence of workers that affects or can affect its OH&S performance; b) ensure that workers are competent on the basis of appropriate education; training or experience; c) where applicable; take actions to acquire and maintain the necessary competence; and evaluate the effectiveness of the actions taken; d) retain appropriate documented information as evidence of competence.

  • Awareness (OHSMS) - 45001.7.3

    Workers shall be made aware of: a) OH&S policy and objectives; b) their contribution to OH&S MS effectiveness; c) implications of not conforming; d) incidents and outcomes of investigations relevant to them; e) hazards; OH&S risks and actions determined relevant to them; f) the ability to remove themselves from work situations that they consider present an imminent and serious danger to their life or health; as well as the arrangements for protecting them from undue consequences for doing so.

  • Communication (OHSMS) - 45001.7.4

    The organization shall establish; implement and maintain the process(es) it needs for internal and external communication relevant to the OH&S MS.

  • Documented information (OHSMS) - 45001.7.5

    The OH&S MS shall include: a) documented information required by this document; b) documented information determined by the organization as being necessary for the effectiveness of the OH&S MS. This clause also covers creating; updating and control of documented information.

The organization shall plan; implement; control and maintain the processes needed to meet requirements of the OH&S management system; and to implement the actions determined in Clause 6.

  • Operational planning and control (OHSMS) - 45001.8.1

    This includes general planning (8.1.1); eliminating hazards and reducing OH&S risks (8.1.2 using hierarchy of controls); management of change (8.1.3); procurement (8.1.4 covering contractors and outsourcing).

  • Emergency preparedness and response (OHSMS) - 45001.8.2

    The organization shall establish; implement and maintain a process(es) needed to prepare for and to respond to potential emergency situations; as identified in 6.1.2.1.

The organization shall monitor; measure; analyse and evaluate its OH&S performance.

  • Monitoring; measurement; analysis and performance evaluation (OHSMS) - 45001.9.1

    The organization shall determine what needs to be monitored and measured (including legal/other requirements; operational controls; OH&S objectives; risks and opportunities); methods; criteria against which OH&S performance is evaluated; when it's performed; when results are analysed/evaluated/communicated. This includes evaluation of compliance with legal and other requirements.

  • Internal audit (OHSMS) - 45001.9.2

    The organization shall conduct internal audits at planned intervals to provide information on whether the OH&S MS: a) conforms to the organization’s own requirements and this document's requirements; b) is effectively implemented and maintained.

  • Management review (OHSMS) - 45001.9.3

    Top management shall review the organization’s OH&S MS at planned intervals; to ensure its continuing suitability; adequacy and effectiveness.

The organization shall determine opportunities for improvement (see 9.1; 9.2 and 9.3) and implement necessary actions to achieve the intended outcomes of the OH&S management system.

  • General (OHSMS) - 45001.10.1

    The organization shall determine opportunities for improvement and implement actions to achieve the intended outcomes of the OH&S MS.

  • Incident; nonconformity and corrective action (OHSMS) - 45001.10.2

    When an incident or nonconformity occurs; the organization shall: a) react in a timely manner; b) evaluate; with the participation of workers and involvement of other relevant interested parties; the need for corrective action to eliminate the root cause(s); c) implement any action needed; d) review the effectiveness of any corrective action taken; e) make changes to the OH&S MS; if necessary.

  • Continual improvement (OHSMS) - 45001.10.3

    The organization shall continually improve the suitability; adequacy and effectiveness of the OH&S MS by: a) enhancing OH&S performance; b) promoting a culture that supports the OH&S MS; c) promoting the participation of workers in implementing actions for the continual improvement of the OH&S MS; d) communicating the relevant results of continual improvement to workers; and; where they exist; workers’ representatives; e) maintaining and retaining documented information as evidence of continual improvement.

Establishes foundational elements for managing workplace safety and health.

  • Safety Policy and Program - OSHA.1.1

    Develop and implement a written safety and health program that outlines management commitment; employee involvement; hazard identification; hazard prevention and control; and safety and health training.

  • Management Leadership - OSHA.1.2

    Demonstrate visible management commitment to safety and health through active participation; resource allocation; and accountability.

  • Worker Participation - OSHA.1.3

    Establish mechanisms for meaningful worker participation in safety and health program development; implementation; and evaluation; including hazard reporting and safety committees.

  • Hazard Identification Process - OSHA.1.4

    Implement a systematic process for identifying existing and potential hazards in the workplace; including routine inspections; incident investigations; and employee hazard reporting.

  • Hazard Prevention and Control - OSHA.1.5

    Establish and implement a hierarchy of controls (elimination; substitution; engineering controls; administrative controls; PPE) to prevent and control identified hazards.

  • Safety Training Program - OSHA.1.6

    Provide comprehensive safety and health training to all employees relevant to their job tasks; identified hazards; and emergency procedures.

  • Incident Investigation and Analysis - OSHA.1.7

    Develop and implement procedures for investigating all incidents (injuries; illnesses; near misses) to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.

  • Program Evaluation and Improvement - OSHA.1.8

    Regularly evaluate the effectiveness of the safety and health program and implement continuous improvement measures.

  • Recordkeeping of Injuries and Illnesses - OSHA.1.9

    Maintain accurate records of work-related injuries and illnesses in accordance with OSHA requirements (e.g.; OSHA 300 Log).

  • Emergency Action Plan - OSHA.1.10

    Develop and implement an emergency action plan (EAP) for fires; evacuations; and other emergencies.

  • Fire Prevention Plan - OSHA.1.11

    Develop and implement a fire prevention plan (FPP) to prevent fires and control fuel sources.

  • First Aid and Medical Services - OSHA.1.12

    Ensure adequate first aid supplies and trained personnel are available; and arrange for prompt medical attention for injured employees.

  • Housekeeping and Workplace Organization - OSHA.1.13

    Maintain a clean; orderly; and sanitary workplace to prevent hazards.

  • Walking-Working Surfaces - OSHA.1.14
